Maasvlakte to house large cross-dock & cold store by 2023

• Shipping heavyweight Maersk and the Port of Rotterdam Authority inked a pact, which involves Maersk building a 23,000-metre square cross-dock and another 35,000-metre square cold store on the site. The complex is expected to be completed in 2023.

Port of Rotterdam, highest polluting European port

• Reacting to a study by European NGO Transport & Environment, the Port of Rotterdam said it is no wonder that it emerged as the highest polluting European port, 13.7 MT of carbon dioxide emissions per annum, by virtue of being the largest continental port. However, the port, which facilitates 30,000 seagoing vessels in a year noted that significant steps are being taken to reduce emissions by employing alternative fuels, building shore power installations and using battery power for inland shipping vessels to become carbon neutral by 2050.

Maersk registers 55 percent revenue growth in 2021

• Shipping heavyweight A. P. Moller Maersk registered a revenue growth of 55 percent in 2021, logging revenues of $61.8 billion. The Danish company’s EBITDA tripled to $24 billion while cash flow was registered at $16.5 billion, enabling Maersk to make strategic long term investments in decarbonisation and logistics growth, along with strong cash distribution to shareholders.
• In 2021, Maersk acquired six businesses in air, electronic commerce (e-commerce), warehousing and fulfilment, including throwing open 85 new warehouses.
• Optimistic of the current market situation to continue well into the second quarter of 2022 and anticipating normalization to happen in the initial part of the second half of the year, Maersk gave the guidance of underlying EBIDTA of around $24 billion, underlying EBIT of $19 billion and free cash flow over $15 billion.

Indian government assures commitment to increase tonnage under the Indian flag

• The Government of India has committed to raise tonnage under the Indian flag through key initiatives such as Revision of the Criteria for Right of First Refusal (ROFR), Ship Building Financial Assistance Policy (2016 – 2026), Subsidy Support for Indian Shipping Companies and Protection to Indian Flag Vessels During Engagement of Foreign Ships.

India records the highest growth in intermediate goods imports

• Powered by industrial supplies across the world, including vaccines and outline rebound of manufacturing supply chains, India recorded the highest growth globally in import of intermediate goods in the third quarter (July to September) of the calendar year 2021.
• These imports rose by 65 percent year-on-year to $81 billion, the World Trade Organization (WTO) noted.

January cargo traffic at Indian ports flat compared to December

• India’s 12 major ports handled 62.68 MT of cargo in January, almost similar to the magnitude handled in December at 62.93 MT. April– January cargo at these ports rose by 9 percent year-on-year to 592 MT.
